SANFORD — Family Promise of Lee County is well on its way to establishing its own Interfaith Hospitality Network with the procurement of a day center and 10 congregations committed to serving as host churches. The organization only needs three more churches to commit to the effort to help Lee County’s homeless population to meet the required number of participating congregations.

The Mayor’s Taskforce on Homelessness began working to establish an Interfaith Hospitality Network in Lee County last fall. The first public meeting in November drew nearly 100 people from 25 congregations. Since then, the group has applied to establish Family Promise of Lee County as an official nonprofit organization and has distributed informational material to churches across the county.

“In light of the tornado relief, it’s really helped us with church recruitment,” Taskforce member Cindy Hall said. “Almost every church has someone who has lost their home though this. They see how easily it can happen. It’s not always a problem with the family, but circumstances that hit you like illness or job loss.”
