A Note from Regional Director Naazish YarKhan:

As the New Year begins, I’m writing to thank you for your generosity with your time, cash, in-kind donations and patience. We are very, very pleased to welcome Br. Moinuddin who will be our new treasurer and Madiha Haroon who will handle our food vouchers.Madiha came by way of Talat Aalia, so inshallah every good that Madiha does, Aalia inshallah will get a share of the reward. Ameen. Farzana has been a great help as Treasurer, and also came by way of Aalia. She will be in touch with RAP, though not in a formal capacity. Jazak Allah Farzana for everything. Sarah Husain who has managed our website so far is due to have her baby any day now. I am looking forward to hearing whether it’s a girl or a boy. Please keep Sarah in your duas.

As We Sow, So Shall We Reap

This week I had the pleasure of working with two Iraqi families – one of whom wants to set up a business fixing garage doors and the other who wants to drive a taxi. It was so good to see them find out details – whether for taxi driving, or links to the items the garage door man needed to start his business. It is a HUGE blessing that RAP today has the money to help these people. Secondly, those things cost so much less than rent payments but will have so much more impact.

I was only too happy to introduce the garage door man to www.Vistaprints for free biz cards andblogspot.com, facebook, wordpress.com to make a free website. Even better, within hours, he had made his business card which RAP will sponsor ( shipping). His high school aged daughter is helping him with all this, and that too is such a rewarding thing to witness.

The person who wanted to be a taxi driver, originally wanted to be a security man. Since he’s had a knee operation, I told him to check whether that would be an issue.Alhamdollilhah, he and his wife did and they discovered he’d have to stand for long hours. So instead he decided to go the taxi driver training route. His wife is a civil engineer and is currently working at O’Hare with handicapped passengers who need help getting around. Please pray for her. Her husband speaks little English and she is his main pillar of support. She is looking into a nursing program.

Kiran has sent out a check to a Dentist who is doing his Kaplan program, so as to enter dental school here. We also sent out his CTA pass bus, this week. Alhamdollilah. Similarly, we’re paying for college for another man who had to make up the difference that his school loan didn’t cover.

Another lady we’d sponsored has now completed Part 2 of her coursework to be a dental assistant. I am going to be in touch with her to see what her next steps are.

Fatima Hindi and the lady with cancer who have been collaborating on a sewing business since 2011. We were able to find an Iraqi (coincidentally) store owner in Chicago who sells used industrial sewing machines who has promised to help these ladies. Fatima Hindi has been doing good things – and not just for herself but for other widows and single moms, as a caterer and with the sewing. We are looking to support her with a car once our $5000 from Zakat Chicago materials, inshallah.

Alhamdollilah, it feels so good to see that we are making a difference in these lives. And to actually now have the time to talk to these people, I am realizing that half of one’s strength in life comes from just feeling heard and understood. Listening is an act of Ibadath, really.

For every time these families make dua for me and thank me, I remind them that it’s not just me but all of you, that have helped make this happen.

Jazak Allah everyone. RAP is what it is because of you.

On that note, onward, stronger, better. Ameen.

Article by World Faith executive director Frank Fredericks

In the 19 November 2011 issue of The Economist, the cover story, called “The magic of diasporas” outlines the benefits of mass immigration, particularly to the West. However the changing demographics in major metropolises can also be a highly destabilising force.

This is especially true in the United States in cities where immigration is high and demographics can change significantly in less than a generation. In some places this has resulted in an increase in hate crimes and communal tensions. Yet some cities handle racial and ethnic diversity better than others and provide valuable lessons for other communities.

One example of this is Queens, one of the lesser known boroughs of New York City. Queens is the most diverse county in America; US Census Bureau statistics suggest that 138 languages are spoken there. Is it a hotbed of racial and ethnic tension? Crime reports suggest surprisingly that it’s not. So how does Queens handle all of this diversity?

In 2010, the state reported only 51 hate crimes in Queens, or .02 incidents per 1,000 people, which is slightly less than the national average. While Queens may be extreme with regards to its diversity and its success at managing diversity, it is not the only such example. London, Kampala, Sydney and Singapore all have strikingly similar stories.

So what keeps these cities from meeting the same fate as our world’s racially or ethnically divided communities? I propose that a lack of an obvious racial or ethnic majority and a loss of communal insularity contribute to functional multiethnic communities.

The neighbourhood of Astoria in Queens, for example, is often associated with its Greek roots; however, the encroachment of other nationalities – Egyptians, Brazilians, Italians, Dominicans, Moroccans, Indians, Colombians, Turks and Chinese – has dissolved any clear majority. What is striking about this diversity is that while Greeks still have a home in Astoria, even in “their” neighbourhood, they cannot avoid interacting with others – bosses, co-workers and friends – from different ethnic communities.

In a place where you cannot eat or work without reaching outside your racial or ethnic community – where community insularity is impossible – the opportunity to isolate yourself and dehumanise another ethnic or racial community becomes difficult. Residents instead have to find constructive ways to interact with one another.

If one way to prevent racial and ethnic tension is increased interaction among groups and the lack of a clear majority, how can cities actively create those types of communities?

While immigration trends and real estate prices play a role in determining where diverse groups choose to live, local government can still play a role in improving racial and ethnic integration.

Schools offer a key opportunity. Schools with multiple ethnic and linguistic groups generate more tolerant youth. A US Commission on Civil Rights report entitled “The Benefits of Racial and Ethnic Diversity in Elementary and Secondary Education” observed that black and white students who attended desegregated schools were “more likely to function in diverse settings later in life.” This can be put into practice simply. Rather than bussing students, simply redistricting school zones can lead to more integrated communities.

However, the responsibility for racial and ethnic integration does not rest solely with the government. Another way to create more interaction among racially and ethnically diverse groups is for businesses to offer products and services that cater to those beyond their own community. In another example from Astoria, one bank employs tellers from different ethnic groups, so that at any moment, they have at least one Spanish, Chinese, Greek and Arabic speaker working. Similarly, the Mexican taco truck on my block that carries a traditional Greek dish is not only widening its clientele but building a more cohesive community. Simply put, people are not only exchanging goods, services and money, but the constant engagement among co-workers, patrons and small business owners across racial and ethnic lines produces relationships, partnerships and humanisation.

Too often, when faced with challenges regarding racial cohesion in metropolises, we focus on communities that illustrate what is going wrong. When we focus on communities that are more cohesive, there are a lot of positive lessons we can learn.

A welcoming air of acceptance.

The latest tech gadget.

One playing in our hearts and minds, the other in our hands.

When these two intermingle, the possibilities are boundless. This is what spurred the

creation of And So You Were Born, an interactive children’s book app just released in the

iTunes App Store.

Creator Mona Parsa holds the vision of a unified world – a world in which no intolerance, no

discrimination, and no inequality remain. Believing that this vision will only arrive and remain by

sewing the seeds today (that is, in children), she took her motivations to an arena which

reaches children worldwide – technology – and will appeal to children everywhere no matter their

background – creating this multifaith, multicultural book app for the iPad, iPhone and iPod.

The text of And So You Were Born explains the love that surrounds the child,

and their purpose in taking that love and spreading it to all in return, from God, to family and

friends. Illustrations of landmarks throughout the world, from all faiths and various countries,

end the book in a beautiful, colorful display.

What can make the book app stand out even more from others? Personalization features

which haven’t even been seen yet in other children’s book apps. Parents can record themselves

on video reading 7 different writings from major faith traditions – and when the book reaches

the page that depicts the child giving devotions with his parents, those videos can be played.

Children take delight in seeing their parents in the book! Parents can also provide personal

details of the child, which shows up within the text throughout the pages. Another source of enjoyment

for children.

Parsa says that she created these personalization features in order for children to be

able to relate to the app as much as possible. She wants them to feel at one with the text and

illustrations, in order for them to feel close to the message. She hopes the book app will show

children that “they are born noble and that they can easily strive everyday to reach that

perfection, one way being to show love to one and all.”

Parsa explains the age progression of the child in the book, which shows the child

growing older and learning to show goodly character and to pay devotions on his own as the years go

by. She hopes children are encouraged to love all, to be a “brilliant star” in their world, thus

being a source of light and inspiration for others, which can then pass on from person to person,

and eventually throughout the world, thereby illuminating the earth and all its inhabitants.

The character-enriching quality of the app has been caught by a Hollywood director, who

has featured And So You Were Born in a film seen in theaters soon. The app will be shown

in the film as having its selected features used in kindergarten classes – classes focusing on

instilling respect and ethics in children to encourage betterment of the world through the use of

love in their personal and future professional lives.

And So You Were Born can be found in the iTunes App Store at:

After the DDA demolished a school in Chilla on July 18th 2011, World Faith New Delhi is happy to share that the Chilla Khadar children have received shelter in order to continue their education. In order to acquire a shelter, the chapter filed a PIL and received some favorable orders, but these orders were not implemented. The chapter continued to follow up with DUSIB and MNGO in order to install a Porta Cabin at Chilla. A Porta Cabin is usually meant for night shelter, however, the chapter is using it in the day time to informally school the children. More than 150 children that were living on the streets are now attending this informal school. Here are some pictures that illustrate the progress that has been made! A special thanks to Sanjay, Aarti, Doug, Shalini , Shehla and Jayshree for helping in this struggle. Let’s hope the DDA doesn’t come and demolish it again!

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy new year! This chapter had a great start to the new year, and we hope you all do as well!

Mosaic’s third International Summit took place on November 2011 with 96 young leaders from 17 countries meeting in Doha, Qatar to participate in a two week leadership development opportunity. Mr. Shahid Rehmat, member of the Christian community of Pakistan and president of Interfaith Youth in Action /World Faith Pakistan, participated in the summit for the first time to represent our interfaith and cross culture initiatives.

The Summit aims for delegates:

1) to develop leadership ability and an aspiration to be an agent of change
2) to develop understanding of key global issues and inspire positive thinking to address them

A critical part of the leadership programme follows the Summit, where participants are supported in their leadership journey by Mosaic. Participants report back on their development and community work every 3 months for a year following the Summit and take an active part in Mosaic’s international network.

The Summit was held from November 14 to 24, 2011 in Doha, Qatar. The workshops, activities and lectures that took place in the first week covered issues such as environmental sustainability, global poverty, inter-cultural relations and leadership skills. The second week was then spent on local projects in which participants had the chance to visit projects of the Qatar Foundation, British Council, Qatar Shell, Aspire Zone, etc and their contributions in the community development initiative at local and regional levels.

When President Obama first announced the White House Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge in March 2011, I was unbelievably excited.

At the time, I was a freshman at Georgetown enthusiastic about finding my niche in college, as well as exploring my religious identity and how that intersected with my American nationality. As a sophomore, I am now strongly committed to this Challenge because interfaith cooperation is extremely important to me on a personal level.

I have come to realize that interfaith cooperation is an exemplary reflection of my core values, both as an American and as a Muslim. READ MORE

I know that effective blog posts require some kind of news hook to get people interested, so, take your pick:

Nearly two weeks ago, 24 Copts died in Egypt.
The most common word association with Mitt Romney is “Mormon,”.
In Iran, a Christian leader was sentenced to death for apostasy.
Tensions among Israelis and Palestinians remain high.

My point? Religious tension is real and the need for cooperation across religious, spiritual, and philosophical lines is more important now than ever. READ MORE

WFI provided roughly 2,400 meals over the course of 10 days to those impacted by the fire. The chapter, largely made up of Sikhs and Hindus, served people like the two pictured below (who are Muslim), making it possible for them to celebrate Eid with food, utensils, and bedding.
